I will write in english as my german is not at its best. Sorry about that. Just reply in german if you prefer - I can read more than I write. ;-)

I drive a 1999 320i and the car has done around 140.000 km. All service checks done at dealership. Lately I have experienced problems that seem to be hard for the mechanic to fix.

When I am driving the car (and engine is at normal temperature) - for example after a redlight I am doing 2.000 rpms ind 2nd gear - and if I then give a lot of gas and accelerates, the car then has a tendency to loose momentum when I reach 4-5.000 rpms. It is quite noticeable that the car looses power and accelerates a lot slower hereafter. If i then brake the car and lets in run idle (engine running when stopped), the car is then vibrating. If the engine is then switched off, and then on again, then the engine is again running perfect.

I have had the mechanics tester connected to the car, and it said that cylinder 3 was not running which was causing the vibrations in idle and loss of power when accelerating. I have had all the plugs (Zündkerzen) changed as well as the ignition coil (Zündspuhle) in cylinder 3. The problem is still there. I am convinced it must be something electrical as it disappears when the engine is turned off and on, but I don't know what.

Could it be the MAF (Luftmassemesser), or is something more specifically related to cylinder 3?

...hi and welcome to the bimmer syndikat! :-)

Did you checked the ignition wire? I've got the same problem in the last and the merchant changed all sparkplugs and ignition wires because in probably of one defect they were all "infected".

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Will take it back to the mechanic next week and suggest your recommendations.

Spark plugs are Bosch, and quite sure coils is high quality as from bmw mechanic.

3rd time lucky - the mechanic tried to change the spark plug cover that is the piece of rubber between the ignition coil and the spark plug - and that helped! And the piece of rubber is only EUR 9, so that is definitely worth a try! Runs like a dream now!

It sound like part no. 3 in this link: click me

This is new for me, i hear never from a spark plug socket with a contact problem, for you it ist perfect, it was a cheap repair.
