Die Lambdasonde vor Kat regelt die Gemischaufbereitung - die Lambdasonde nach Kat ist ausschließlich für die Kontrolle der Verbrennung und die Abgaswerte - sie hat aber keinen Einfluß auf die Leistung. Allerdings führt ein Defekt der Lambdasonde oder eine unsaubere Verbrennung dazu, daß die Motorkontrolleuchte leuchtet (MKL) und es somit bei der nächste AU Probleme gibt.

Eine defekte Lambdasonde sollte schnellstmöglich getauscht werden, da der Motor sonst unsauber und unruhig läuft oder gar stottert und Zündaussetzer hat. Eine defekte Lambdasonde kann in der Regel beim Auslasen des Fehlerspeichers mittels BMW Diagnose erkannt werden. Der Austausch der Lambdasonde ist vergleichsweise einfach und schnell zu bewerkstelligen.

Hierfür ist kein Spezialwerkzeug erforlderlich - höchstens ein Lamdasondenschlüssel - also eine Nuss mit einem entsprechend langem Schlitz für das Kabel und den Stecker der Lambdasonde. Voorsicht: das korrekte Drehmoment ist beim Anziehen der Sonde extrem wichtig.

Die Mini R60 Paceman Lamdasonde sitzt im Abgasstrang des Fahrzeuges - entweder im Krümmer oder direkt im Katalysator. Es gibt mindestens zwei Lambdasonden: Lambdasonde vor-Kat und Lambdasonde nach-Kat. Bei V8-Motoren zum beispiel gibt es diese doppelt für Bank 1 und Bank 2.
