Je nach Bauform wird der Klimakompressor durch den Motor oder durch entsprechende Elektromotoren angetrieben. Bei den meisten Fahrzeugen mit Verbrennungsmotor wird der Klimakompressor mittels Riemenscheibe oder mittels Riemenscheibe angetrieben. Man unterscheidet darüber hinaus zwischen dem Taumelscheibenverdichter, dem Hubkolbenverdichter oder dem Flügelzellenverdichter. Zudem gibt es den Spiralverdichter bzw. Scrollverdichter oder den Drehkolbenkompressor. Der Klimakompressor ist ein klassisches Zuliefererteil.

Beim Tausch bzw. einer Reparatur des Klimakompressors ist darauf zu achten, das Kältemittel nicht in die Umwelt entweichen zu lassen. Sowohl Kältemittel als auch das entsprechende Schmieröl des Klimakompressors sollten umweltgerecht entsorgt werden. Ein defekter Klimakompressor kann sich durch Undichtigkeiten, erhebliche Geräuschentwicklungen, eine mangelhafte Kühlleistung der Klimaanlage oder durch Fehlercodes im Bordcomputer bzw. Motor- und Zentralsteuergerät bemerkbar machen.
