No chance, you can not put a older engine in a car, only younger is legal. Emissons level is here the rule for engine swap. A 318ti have minimum Euro1 emisson level, when it is a M44 engine then it hve Euro 2. You need minimum a engine in the same level. So the best is a M50B25TÜ or a M52B25/ M52B28 for you.
